On 13 June 2026, SingCham Shanghai, in collaboration with SingCham Youth Development and the Singapore Students' Association (SSA), hosted a student orientation in Shanghai to warmly welcome the latest cohort of Singaporean students in China. The event was supported by the Consulate-General of the Republic of Singapore in Shanghai. It brought together nearly 30 full-time students, exchange students, and interns from eight institutions including Fudan University, National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Theatre Academy, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, and Zhejiang University. Through forging early connections and offering insights into living, studying, and working in China, the orientation marked a new chapter for Singaporean students in Shanghai.

Mr. William Chang
Chairman of SingCham Shanghai
Mr. William Chang, Chairman of SingCham Shanghai, kickstarted the session by highlighting SingCham's mission in promoting Singaporean business interests and serving as a bridge between Singapore and China, economically, socially, and culturally. He introduced the chamber's diverse initiatives aimed at building a supportive network for Singaporeans in China — the chamber currently has approximately 2,200 to 2,300 members, including exchange students and interns. He shared the vision behind SingCham Youth Development: equipping Singaporean youths with localised and in-depth perspectives of China, promoting people-to-people exchanges with Chinese peers, offering exposure to China's unique business landscape, and instilling the entrepreneurial spirit and resilience essential to navigating China's dynamic environment.

Mr. Phang Kang Qu
Vice President of the Singapore Students' Association (SSA) Shanghai
Following the Chairman's remarks, Mr. Phang Kang Qu, Vice President of the Singapore Students' Association (SSA) Shanghai, welcomed the new cohort. He introduced SSA's mission — which is updated on an annual basis to adapt to the changing environment — and outlined the annual activity plans, encouraging all students to actively participate in the association's events and build a warm sense of community away from home. He also presented that SSA members come from diverse academic backgrounds, including Chinese literature, humanities, finance, medicine, and natural sciences.
Consul-General's Remarks

The highlight of the event was marked by the presence of Mr. Tan Chee King, Consul-General of the Republic of Singapore in Shanghai. He encouraged students to cherish their time in China with an open and inclusive mindset, and highlighted the role of SingCham and SSA in this context — aiming to understand China better to serve as a bridge between Singapore and China, support the Singaporean community in China, and work with independent organisations and partners to achieve shared goals. His sharing offered attendees profound insights into the trajectory of Singapore-China relations.

One of the most heartfelt segments of the day was the student sharing session, where attendees from different universities and backgrounds shared their motivations for choosing to study or exchange in China, along with their personal experiences of life in Shanghai.
We heard from students across all year levels and majors — from first-year freshers to final-year seniors, representing Fudan University, National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and beyond. They candidly discussed the challenges of adapting to a new environment, including language barriers, cultural adjustments, and occasional homesickness. From pursuing language immersion to exploring China's fast-evolving industries, the students spoke openly about their aspirations and the real lessons learned along the way.
This orientation marked a meaningful beginning for many — a moment to connect, reflect, and look ahead. We look forward to growing this Singaporean student network in China, and organising many more events that bring us closer together.
