Navigating Challenges with Collaboration
Mr. William Chang, Chairman of SingCham Shanghai, acknowledged that while China's economic growth has slowed, the evolving competitiveness of Chinese firms presents both challenges and opportunities for Singaporean businesses. "With stable relations between Singapore and China, our companies have adapted to the shifting landscape, mitigating risks and uncovering new opportunities," said Mr. Chang. He emphasized the importance of Singapore maintaining its reputation for reliability and innovation, especially in uncertain times of international turbulence.

"Before diving into the Shanghai chapter, I have a few questions for you. Last year, Singapore emerged as Shanghai's largest foreign investor. Why do so many Singapore businesses choose Shanghai as their first point of entry into the Chinese market? What makes Shanghai so unique?"

Mr. William Chang
"Shanghai is one of China’s leading economic hubs, boasting a robust financial sector, advanced infrastructure, and a vibrant business ecosystem. Its geographic location along the Yangtze River Delta offers unparalleled access to both domestic and international markets. Shanghai’s open business environment, coupled with favorable government policies and incentives, makes it particularly attractive to foreign investors. These advantages create a highly conducive environment for Singaporean companies to establish and grow their presence. The strong economic ties between Singapore and Shanghai also play a significant role. Singaporean firms recognize the strategic value of operating in Shanghai, given its pivotal role in China's economy. That said, challenges remain. As SM Lee noted during his roundtable discussions with business leaders, issues like China's slowing economic growth and the property sector crisis have had an impact."

"From your perspective on the ground with SingCham, could you elaborate on the difficulties businesses are facing in this environment?"
Mr. William Chang
"Operating in China comes with its complexities, particularly the frequently changing regulatory landscape and the intricate policy environment. Fortunately, Singaporean companies generally possess a strong understanding of global compliance standards, which allows them to navigate these challenges effectively. Leveraging local expertise and partnerships further equips them to adapt to the evolving business climate. Another significant challenge is the heightened competition from both local and international players, all vying for a share of the lucrative Chinese market. The competitive landscape has become increasingly fierce. However, Singaporean businesses stand out by leveraging innovative solutions and fostering strategic partnerships that are tailored to the unique demands of the Chinese market. These strengths not only help them navigate the challenges but also position them to thrive in this highly competitive and complex environment."
Adapting Strategies for Success

Ms. Tina Ng
"Take baby steps and understand the culture. Don’t come in thinking you know everything," she cautioned. Highlighting the current economic uncertainties, Ms. Ng urged prudence: "We’re helping some Singapore brands enter, but we’re careful. We don’t want them to fail after six months."
Economic Challenges and Government Response
Mr. Joey Yeo, Vice-Chair of SingCham Shanghai, weighed in on China’s ongoing economic issues, including the real estate sector crisis.
Mr. Joey Yeo
"China’s economy is slowing, but the government is actively introducing measures to stabilize the situation," he explained. "In real estate, for example, local governments are supporting the market with tax breaks for first-time buyers." Despite the challenges, Mr. Yeo expressed optimism about Singaporean businesses’ ability to adapt and thrive by aligning with China’s evolving policies and leveraging local partnerships.
